Congratulations to the 2021 Pirate of the Year as voted by the Lubbock-Cooper community, Tami Gunset! A Lubbock native, Tami began her educational career in 1997, teaching and coaching at Lubbock ISD. She served as the head soccer coach and assistant volleyball coach at Monterey High School, her alma mater, and the head volleyball coach and assistant softball coach at Estacado High School. In 2004, the Lubbock-Cooper ISD athletic director made a phone call that changed the course of LCISD history, when Tami was offered the head volleyball coaching position at Lubbock-Cooper High School, where she also became a health teacher and assistant softball coach. Her reputation for professionalism, discipline, and a passion for growing leaders led her to the Pirate family. Tami’s career blossomed at Lubbock-Cooper ISD, and she was soon named assistant principal at Lubbock-Cooper Middle School. In 2013, she was honored as the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals Assistant Principal of the Year. Tami took over leadership of LCMS at the start of the 2013-14 school year, and has served as principal of the campus through a number of significant events, including moving buildings mid-year and the design and construction of a brand new campus known as one of the most innovative educational environments in the entire state. Tami and her husband, Lary, have two children: Bradley and Addison, both enrolled in Lubbock-Cooper ISD. Tami is often seen on the sidelines at any number of athletic events, cheering on not only her children, but all Lubbock-Cooper children. She has chaperoned out-of-town trips, allowing students to compete in a variety of academic competitions. She has facilitated the establishment of new organizations and events, ensuring that all Pirates have something to participate in, something that makes them proud of themselves. Tami is a servant leader, and her vehicle is often spotted parked at Lubbock-Cooper Middle School after hours and on weekends. She has an unmatched passion for her job, and she has made Lubbock-Cooper her home, while doing the same for so many students who enter the doors of her school. Several note that Tami views the families of Lubbock-Cooper staff and students as her own, and she cares for them with sincerity, compassion, and advocacy. One such example is the year that our region experienced an unprecedented freeze and many were without power and water, when Tami opened the showers and other facilities of her campus to families throughout our community (and even a few families that drove hours to take advantage of the generous offer). Tami Gunset is a pillar of the LCISD community, and her firm but compassionate campus leadership has impacted thousands of children throughout our district.

Connor Wesley, a Lubbock-Cooper High School senior, has been named a semifinalist in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program. An estimated 16,000 students were chosen for this honor based upon high school academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, honors and awards received, and highest scoring in the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Semifinalist students in Texas had to meet a qualifying index score of 220. "I'm thankful for this opportunity," said Connor. "It's an affirmation, like seeing the sun rise for the first time. It gives me nothing but gratitude for the supporting and inspiring people in my life and even more hope for what's to come." Connor participates in a number of activities at Lubbock-Cooper High School, including Academic Decathlon, UIL math, UIL science, UIL computer science, U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad, and the Student Innovation Challenge. He is a NASA High School Aerospace Scholar and a chemistry intern at Texas Tech University. He hopes to attend MIT and double major in Chemistry and Engineering. National Merit Finalists will be announced in February 2022. Congratulations, Connor! The Pirate family is so proud of your hard work!

On Friday, September 17, the Pirate varsity football team will host the Monterey Plainsmen at 7:00 p.m. at Pirate Stadium at First United Park. As a Pirate Family, we are uniting with the Monterey community to white out Pirate Stadium in memory of Lataiya White, mother of a Lubbock-Cooper High School student and a Monterey High School varsity football player. Mrs. White passed away earlier this week. Pirate fans, please wear white to Friday night's game (and spread the word) to show your support for this family!
